Concepts of Our Laboratory

In 2050 in Japan, one in 2.5 people will become elderly person aged 65 or over. It means Japan becomes the most significant super-aging society in the world. In addition, the increase in obese population, which is involved in the onset of lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, has become a major social problem not only in developed countries but also around the world. To prevent the onset of various diseases that develop with aging and to extend healthy lifespan, as mentioned below, we are focusing the mitochondrial function, particularly in adipose tissue and adipocytes (fat cells) in prolongevity model animals and obesity model animals. We are searching for target molecules to develop drugs for treating obesity and improving whole body metabolism.
